I’m Juan Luis Santana, MD, MPH, a Research Fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), focusing on global pulmonology and artificial intelligence. Born in Boston and largely raised in the Dominican Republic, I completed medical school there in 2016 and earned my Master of Public Health from Harvard in 2023. Before joining MGH, I collaborated on research at the Harvard Kennedy School, served as the Coordinator of Analysis and Studies at the National Health Service of the Dominican Republic, and taught Information Technology and Research Methods at O&M Medical School in the Dominican Republic.
I was motivated to join the AI for Good Institute Program because it aligns perfectly with my goal of using AI to create meaningful, real-world impact—especially in healthcare. The focus on building ethical, scalable, and financially sustainable solutions resonated with me as I work on addressing disparities in global health. The opportunity to learn from experienced technologists and present to venture capitalists was a big draw, as was the program’s emphasis on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
At the AI for Good Institute, the most impactful moments included developing a hands-on project, receiving mentorship from industry experts, and pitching ideas to venture capitalists. These experiences pushed me to think critically about transforming concepts into meaningful solutions. The program’s focus on ethical innovation and creating sustainable, human-centered products aligned with my long-term goal of using AI to address healthcare inequalities.
At the institute, I pitched a startup project with my cofounder, AJ, called Equilibrio. The project focuses on developing an affordable, AI-powered solution to improve data collection and healthcare delivery in resource-limited settings, particularly tackling disparities in global health.
I’ve continued working with my cofounder AJ on growing Equilibrio toward its next steps. We’re refining our platform to effectively meet the needs of developing countries looking to improve patient care and data infrastructure.
Right now, I’m conducting research at Massachusetts General Hospital, specifically on using AI to improve global health and radiology for early disease detection. At the same time, I’m nurturing the growth of Equilibrio. My vision is to leverage AI to make healthcare more equitable and accessible, especially for underserved populations. Through my research and startup, I’m dedicated to creating ethical and impactful solutions that drive meaningful change.
